"M&S Sales Drop, Plastic Bag Sales Lead the Way"

This report demonstrates that high end marketing is often the first to suffer in an economic slow down.  However, I think there may be another reason:  M&S' decision to sell shopping bags for a whopping 5p each.  The 5p apparently goes to a good cause so bag sales won't affect the bottom line.  What will affect it is the "great turn off" that M&S has created among many of its loyal customers.  Perhaps fewer people are entering M&S because of this and not the economy?
